Experience Dolphin Swimming Adventures in Akaroa

Experience Dolphin Swimming Adventures in Akaroa

I missed the opportunity to swim with dolphins in Kaikoura and thought I wouldn’t get another chance. However, upon arriving in Christchurch and checking into my hostel, I discovered there was a chance to swim with dolphins in Akaroa. Determined not to miss out again, I booked a tour with Black Cat Cruises and set off for Akaroa.

Akaroa is a charming village about 80 km from Christchurch, nestled around a stunning harbor formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions. The drive there was incredibly scenic, but after nearly two weeks in New Zealand, spectacular views were becoming almost routine.

Upon arrival, I checked in for the tour and geared up for the adventure. We received a briefing about safety and swimming protocols. Unfortunately, we couldn’t bring any large cameras or bags on the boat, but I managed to take my smaller camera to capture some moments.

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. It wasn’t too hot or too cold, making it an ideal day to be out on the water. As we set off, we were treated to glimpses of local wildlife, including little blue penguins fishing in the water. We also learned about the Hector’s dolphins, one of the rarest and shy species of dolphins, found only in this part of New Zealand. Since they are protected and endangered, any interaction would be entirely on their terms—no touching, just observing and hoping they’d be curious enough to approach us.

Soon, we spotted a few dolphins in the distance. Although I didn’t have a waterproof camera and my point-and-shoot wasn’t performing well, I managed to snap a few photos from the boat. We were given stones to make underwater noise, especially since I was one of the stronger swimmers in our group. Clad in our wetsuits to combat the chilly New Zealand waters, we slid into the ocean where the dolphins were swimming.

Despite our best efforts to attract the dolphins, they remained elusive. They popped up on the outskirts of our group but didn’t come close. Every time we tried to approach, they seemed to find other things to do. I’d like to think it wasn’t my fault, perhaps one of my boat mates wasn’t as appealing to the dolphins!

In the end, the dolphins decided not to play, just teasing us from a distance. Even though we didn’t get to swim with them, it was a great experience being out on the water. We received partial refunds and the option for another trip, but I decided to head back to Christchurch. One of the other participants was already on her second trip of the day with no luck either. While I didn’t get the dolphin swim I hoped for, I highly recommend Black Cat Cruises for their excellent service and professionalism.
