Exploring Hemingway's Legacy in Ketchum, Idaho: A Visitor's Guide

Ernest Hemingway: An American Icon in Idaho

Ernest Hemingway, renowned for his powerful prose and adventurous spirit, is one of America’s literary giants. His works, such as “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” “A Farewell to Arms,” “The Old Man and the Sea,” and “The Killers,” are celebrated worldwide. When I arrived in Ketchum, Idaho, I was surprised to learn that this illustrious author had once called it home. So, how did Hemingway find his way to this idyllic locale?

Hemingway in Idaho

Hemingway first visited Sun Valley, Idaho, in 1939, joining a distinguished roster of celebrities. He stayed at the Sun Valley Lodge in suite 206, where he completed his novel “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Over the years, Hemingway made regular visits to Sun Valley, forging friendships, frequenting local bars, and immersing himself in the community. He made Ketchum his summer retreat and maintained a winter residence in Cuba.

In 1959, Hemingway purchased a home with a view of the Big Wood River in Ketchum, where he spent his final years. Sadly, he struggled with severe depression and, in July 1961, took his own life.

His Final Resting Place

Today, Hemingway rests in the Ketchum Cemetery in Sun Valley, Idaho. This tranquil place, surrounded by friends and family, marks the end of his journey.
