New York City and romance are a perfect pair. Although NYC can be pricey, there’s plenty to do without spending a fortune. We’ve discovered some of the most romantic, budget-friendly spots in the city.
The High Line
Though it’s based on a repurposed train track, the High Line is undeniably romantic. This park winds through a mile of trees and flowers, offering secluded nooks where you can have a private conversation or just sit quietly with someone special. Stargazing lovers will appreciate the free stargazing sessions on Tuesday nights from April to October. Plus, the area boasts several nearby cafes for a delightful coffee, tea, or hot chocolate break.
Location: Gansevoort & Washington to 34th & 12th Ave
Hours: 7am – 7pm
Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry is a beloved choice among locals and tourists for stunning views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty—all for free! On a pleasant day, standing and admiring the Manhattan skyline or watching the waves can be a perfect, cost-free outing with someone. And when you reach Staten Island, you can either explore and dine or hop right back on the ferry.
Central Park
Central Park is truly unmatched. While the southern parts can be crowded, just a short walk deeper into the park reveals quieter, more romantic spots such as Strawberry Fields, Bow Bridge, and The Reservoir. Summers offer the added bonus of free Shakespeare in the Park performances. The park is an ideal place for wandering trails, lounging on the grass, or enjoying a picnic under a tree.
The Cloisters
Technically not free, but if you’re a local or have ID, you can make a donation to enter any of the MET properties. The Cloisters, with their covered walkways and open courtyards, are perfect for a peaceful stroll or a quiet moment with someone special. Even on busier days, the serene atmosphere allows for some solitude among the pillars.
Brooklyn Bridge & Park
Walking the historic Brooklyn Bridge is a favorite activity. Enjoy the scenic views of the city, and follow it up with a visit to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Here, you can people-watch, ride Jane’s Carousel, or simply relax on the grass while admiring the Manhattan skyline.
