Exploring the Windows Trail Hike at Arches National Park: Your Ultimate Guide

One of my favorite hikes is the incredibly accessible route that lets you explore three stunning arches. The Windows Arch is one of the best short hikes in Arches National Park, and its popularity is obvious. You can get up close to these majestic formations and choose whether to take a quick stroll or spend hours marveling at the scenery. Here’s everything you need to know about the hike.

About the Windows Trail Hike

Distance: 1 – 1.2 miles | Type: Loop | Elevation Gain: 154 feet | Difficulty: Easy

The Windows Trail is an easy, well-marked loop of about 1.2 miles that takes you to three remarkable arches: North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch. The trail can be completed in either direction, so you can choose to visit the windows first or head to the Turret Arch. You can backtrack slightly to complete a loop or finish at the South Window and return via the “primitive trail.” Unless you’re keen on the primitive trail adventure, backtracking will save you some distance.

If you’re looking for another quick hike, the Double Arch trailhead starts on the opposite side of the parking lot and takes you to one of the park’s most iconic structures.

Best Times to Hike

This trail is fantastic year-round. Winter hikes are possible as long as the roads are open, and you might even see snow clinging to the arches for a unique experience. Summer hikes can be hot, so it’s essential to carry water and prepare for the heat and sun. Given its popularity, visiting during the off-season means fewer crowds and a more peaceful experience.

Getting to the Windows Trail

The trailhead for Windows Trail is about 11.5 miles (a 21-minute drive) from the Arches National Park Visitor Center, located down Windows Road. You’ll pass through scenic spots like the Garden of Eden along the way. The parking area, which accommodates around 50 cars, is reasonably spacious. There’s also parking near the Double Arch trailhead on the other side of the loop.

Hiking the Windows Trail

The trail is straightforward and well-marked from start to finish. Here’s a rundown of the arches you’ll encounter:

Turret Arch: Easily noticeable, this arch stands out with a unique outcropping at one end. Starting with Turret Arch is great if you plan to return via the primitive trail.

North Window Arch: My personal favorite, the North Window offers a spectacular view. A small hill allows you to stand beneath it, providing a fantastic photo opportunity.

South Window: Just across a pillar from the North Window, this arch can be viewed from beneath as well. You can frame both windows in one shot from a distance or admire them up close.

From the South Window, you can either take the primitive trail back to the entrance or simply backtrack, making a smaller loop if you prefer.

Tips & FAQs

– Make sure to check out the Double Arch and other stunning features like the Garden of Eden along the drive.
– The primitive trail offers an alternative route back but doesn’t add much to the hike.
