I’ve been receiving numerous emails about the cherry blossoms in DC lately. This time of year is always a favorite, not just for me but for so many others as well. The cherry blossoms are more than just a sign of spring; they transform the entire city into something even more beautiful.
This year, however, has been much colder than usual. In some past years, we’ve experienced the blossoms arriving earlier than expected, catching many of us by surprise.
Here’s the official bloom forecast:
– National Park Service: April 11 – 14, 2015
– Washington Post: April 9 – 13, 2015
These predictions seem pretty accurate. Given the colder-than-usual weather, and even some snow last Friday, I anticipate it will be at least another week or two before the blossoms start appearing in full.
I’ve recently taken some photos of the early blossoms. It’s tough to say definitively whether they’re cherry or peach blossoms at this stage. I usually wait for full bloom to be sure, but a few trees are starting to show signs of life with sparse blooms here and there.
For those who have already planned trips to DC, don’t worry! The National Cherry Blossom Festival is underway and runs through April 12th. Be sure to visit the official website for details on all the exciting activities.
